GULBIYAAY
Translated as "Welcome" in Gamilraay
Walhallow Local Aboriginal Land Council was established under the New South Wales (NSW) Aboriginal Land Rights Act (1983). We are the peak representative and advocacy body for Aboriginal people living in Walhallow and surrounding areas – having done so since we opened our doors in 1984.
Thirty-four (34) kilometers west of Quirindi, Walhallow is the site of a former Aboriginal Reserve known as “Caroona” mission and part of the Liverpool Plains Shire Council Local Government Area. It is home of the Gamilaroi Nation and to more than 100 people living across 230 acres of Country (which also extends across Gunnedah Shire Council). |
“We have lived in the community since we were born. Growing up in the community we have seen many changes. There was no electricity, and we would have to walk to the shop in the village. Our father was always away working in Queensland. Back in the early days there were managers who had control over the place. The garbage would be taken out by horse and cart”
– Patricia Slater, Community Member.
